That other disinterested grunt

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

or to put it another way “meh” is the new “feh.”

We love the expression “feh.” It’s an acknowledgment of activity with no element of approval. It’s like a sigh without the emotion, a scowl without the anger, a turn-and-walk away that can happen when you’re miles apart.

But tonight we found a new expression on the message boards at Simply Syndicated, one which threatens to replace “feh” as our signature noise: “meh.”

The subtle difference here is the suggestion of contemplation or near approval in the “m” sound. Not quite “hmmm, yeah”… it falls short and offers that same blandness “feh” provides with a bit of tease in front.

Clearly we have too much time on or hands here at that other page.

meh…

That other award winning chili

That Other Chili's award winning chefFor the second year in a row, my wife has entered her chili in the Mays Landing Merchants Association Fall Festival chili contest. And for the second year in a row, she has earned a ribbon (and cash prize) with a top 3 finish in the competition.

Needless to say, she makes a very tasty chli (among other dishes). She gives the chili a nice texture by using three types of beans and adding in potatoes. Somehow she gives it a kick without overpowering the robust flavor. And the end result… well, the end result is award-winningly good.

Mmmm…. I’m getting hungry now just thinking of it.

Anyway, on behalf of our children and the other writers at That Other Page, I’d like to take a moment and say “congratulations!” to my wife, Mary Ann. Nice job, Hon, we’re all very proud of you (and lucky to be able to enjoy your chili a lot more often than just once a year).
